Allen Stone on Craig Ferguson

Sweet Sounds from the Blue Eyed Soul Man

Allen Stone appeared on the episode of The Late Late Show with Craig Fergusonthat aired in Australia on Monday. I believe that this show went out on Friday in America.

Allen performed a great version of his song Unaware from his self titled album.

For those of you who are unaware, Allen Stone is a 25 year old singer/songwriter from Chewelah, Washington, USA and as you can see a white dude. But he is heavily influenced by the soul and R&B artists of the 60’s and 70’s. I can’t help but notice a similarity to Daryl Hall, another white man who sings high and has a great soul voice.

Stone appeared on Hall’s Live from Daryl’s House a while ago and the two harmonised beautifully. He also features in the latest episode, Live At The Borgata that also includes Sharon Jones, both shows are well worth checking out when you have the time.

Like many soul artists Allen Stone had his roots in gospel music. His father was the pastor of a local church in Chewelah. He never really listened to secular music until he was in his teens, but then he developed his taste for classic soul.

His self titled album was first released digitally through his own Stickystones label, about a year ago. This year the ATO Records label signed Allen Stone and reissued the album in the northern summer.

The Craig Ferguson Show was far from his first appearance on national TV. He has been a favourite of the talk show circuit, appearing on Letterman, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Last Call with Carson Daly.

Stone’s music reminds me of so many artists in my collection. Apart from Daryl Halland the 60’s and 70’s soul artists already mentioned, his song writing style also reminds me of another favourite of recent years Keb Mo. That’s another positive in my book.
